The Romanic Philology Subject Group
French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, Catalan
Introduction
The courses introduce students to the languages and literatures of the above languages, both oral and written, both in their countries of origins and around the world, such as in Latin America or the former French colonies. Attention is paid to contents, forms and functions, to relationships to other languages and cultures and to various forms of media production. The subjects are divided into three main areas: linguistics, literary studies and language skills. For the Master of Arts (M.A.), these areas can be the chief area of attention for those majoring, or be studied on their own for those taking the language concerned as a minor subject.
- M.A. (as major subject): French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese
- M.A. (as minor subject): French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, Catalan
- German state teaching qualification (Staatsexamen): French and Spanish
Linguistics
This part of the course concentrates on a structural and functional analysis of the relevant languages as they developed over time and in their present day forms. The course aims to:
- provide students with basic knowledge of the structure, development and usage of the languages;
- give them a broad introduction to scholarly analysis and linguistic methodology with emphasis on the structure, acquisition and function of these languages;
- help them acquire the ability to produce independent scholarly work and to present the results in oral and written form in the relevant language.
Literary Studies
This part of the course traces the literatures of the relevant languages from their beginnings in the Middle Ages to the present day. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the complex relationship of genesis, transmission and reception in their historical and genre-specific contexts. The course aims to:
- give students a solid introduction to the origins and developments of the various literatures against the background of a changing concept of literature;
- give them a broad introduction to scholarly analysis and methods of criticism based on the literature in question;
- help them acquire the ability to produce indepenent scholarly work and to present the results in oral and written form in the relevant language.
Language Skills
The language courses aim to develop both general and subject-specific language skills at the same time as deepening students' knowledge of the relevant culture. The goal is oral and written fluency. In French, students are expected to bring with them a level of linguistic competence equivalent to five to seven years of French classes at school. Should this not be the case, extra classes can be taken at the University.
Beginners' classes are offered in all other languages, but students can expect to have to prolong their studies by at least one semester.
Length of Study
Normally 9-10 Semesters
