Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Juliane House ist Professorin i. R. für Sprachlehrforschung, Schwerpunkte Englisch / Deutsch als Fremdsprache
Sie hat zunächst an der Universität Heidelberg den Grad einer Diplom-Übersetzerin für Englisch, Spanisch und Internationales Recht erworben, hat dann als Übersetzerin und Marktforscherin gearbeitet und Deutsch für Ausländer unterrichtet, bevor sie nach Kanada auswanderte und dort an der University of Toronto die akademischen Grade B.Ed., M.A. und PhD erworben hat.
An der Universität Bochum hat sie an Forschungsprojekten mitgearbeitet und eine hochschulpädagogische Ausbildung absolviert. An der Universität Hamburg war sie für Sprachlehrforschung und den Schwerpunkt Deutsch als Fremdsprache zuständig und hat drei Projekte am Sonderforschungsbereich 538: Mehrsprachigkeit geleitet. Ihre Forschungsinteressen sind Übersetzungstheorie, Kontrastive Pragmatik, Diskursanalyse, interkulturelle Kommunikation, Missverstehen im interkulturellen Diskurs, Höflichkeitstheorien und Englisch als ingua franca.
Diese Forschungsinteressen spiegeln sich in ihren über 200 Veröffentlichungen wider. Zu nennen sind hier besonders:
