29 June 2023, by JH
On July 03, 2023, 4:15 p.m., in room Ü35-00129-02, Dr Thomas Vozar (Universität Hamburg) will hold a guest lecture within the framework of the lecture class „Key Concepts of English Literature and Culture: The Early Modern Period”. The guest lecture is titled: "Early Modern Orientalism: Knowledge and Representation". All welcome.
This lecture explores the nature of orientalism as a form of knowledge and as a form of representation in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. It considers the rise of oriental scholarship in Europe, with attention to the poet John Donne's Arabic learning as an example, and reflects on representations of the Orient in Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene (1590/1596), Christopher Marlowe's Tamburlaine (c. 1587–1588), and William Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra (c. 1607).
