22 March 2017, by Johanna Heinemeier
An exciting new festival-experience is coming up for the UPs: They were asked to participate in a collaborative project with Nigel Harvey, a director they met at FEATS and BAWDF. He's been rehearsing with the UPs for the MADF Easter Festival of Full-Length Plays. Additionally, they are being supported by the Lighting department of the Hamburg Players, which adds to the collaborative festival spirit even more.
The festival will take place at the Gaiety Theatre in Douglas (Isle of Man) from
Saturday 15th – Friday 21st April 2017. You can check the full festival programme online.
The University Players' performance: Thursday, 20th April 2017
* Lift Not the Painted Veil by Julie Lerpiniere & Nigel Harvey and
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Lift Not the Painted Veil tells the story of Mary Shelley and her creation Frankenstein. An old Mary Shelley in her final hours is visited by her creation. Through this meeting Mary is transported back to the period when she got the ideas for her famous novel. But why is the monster here? What does he want?
In the second half, the Creature himself gives his account of the story through Mary Shelley’s famous words. The often neglected perspective of the so-called “monster” uncovers, where the actual horror of Frankenstein lies: Prejudice, isolation, vengefulness and the lack of responsibility that human-beings feel for each other. Who are the real monsters in our society?
By the way: You won't have to travel all the way to the Isle of Man to see the production. The University Players try to have at least one show in Hamburg in the late spring, so keep an eye on their website for further news.
