This talk, which will be limited to pre-and post-independence India, will focus on how the assertion of socio-cultural identities is enacted through English. It will start with what identity assertion means. Then it will be highlighted how English has been a tool of identity assertion in India. Finally, the emerging sociopolitical scenarios that can determine how English shapes identities in the country will be discussed.
