This talk approaches English as a as a global contact language and relates typological perspectives to variationist questionnaire data collected within the scope of the /Bamberg Questionnaire Database/. This resource comprises information on speakers’ choices pertaining to 68 lexical items as well as extensive informant metadata. Its scope is broad and allows for a detailed comparison of varieties across the variety type spectrum. The database can be explored to shed light on a number of pertinent issues, which include (i) identifying the actual existence of distinct regional and/or variety type patterns, (ii) determining the relative influence of British and American English, respectively, as lexifier or “parent” varieties for different ESL (and EFL) varieties and (iii) highlighting the benefits of an integrated study of different variety types, especially against the backdrop of a variety type continuum.
