Abstract
Against the background of a pluricentric conceptualisation of world Englishes, linguistic epicentres are standardised national varieties of English that exert structural influences on national varieties in their vicinities. In the light of this linguistic interpretation of the epicentre concept borrowed from seismic geology, corpus-linguistic and attitudinal evidence is used to explore to what extent Indian English can be regarded as the linguistic epicentre of South Asian Englishes. In this context, the methodological toolkit employed in epicentral research is critically discussed and some recommendations regarding future epicentral studies are offered.
