Kommentare/ Inhalte: This class introduces students to the phonetics and phonology of Learner Englishes and Postcolonial Varieties of English. Why do learners struggle to pronounce certain sounds in a target-like manner? In what ways does Indian English sound different compared to other varieties? What is intelligibility and why is it important for the use of English as a Lingua Franca? As we explore these and similar questions, we will learn a range of methods, including how to analyse speech acoustically with dedicated software. Thus, students in this class should ideally not have a deep-seated aversion to numbers and to working with computers. This class is organised as an intensive course, and will meet on the following dates:
2 Fr, 19. Jun. 2020 14:00 19:00
3 Di, 21. Jul. 2020 14:00 19:00
