With its focus on graphic novels, the research project explores innovative forms of graphic literature that have emerged roughly since the 1970s. They are aimed at adult readers who, through their media socialization, are familiar with the aesthetic strategies of comics and fluidly move across the boundary between art and popular culture. The emphasis throughout is on works that deal with crisis phenomena such as death, terrorism, and war. Generally speaking, graphic novels have created new ways of representing traumatic experiences which, as a consequence, become communicable to others. These processes of transformation can be effectively described by making use of the concepts of the research network.
The starting point of this project is the fact that graphic novels of necessity transform linguistic, acoustic, written, and visual elements into a specific aesthetic practice, which is conceived of as a reciprocal process of framing and translation. Thus, dynamic actions such as movement and dialogue are translated into a sign system, which in turn requires framing to become intelligible. The ‘language’ of graphic novels is based on an intermedial semantics, whose basic elements of image and frame constitute each other and enable the production of meaning in the creative reading process. Graphic novels have thus generated media-specific practices of framing and translation. What is more, following Jacques Derrida, frames always evoke that which lies beyond, or what is imagined by the reader.
