For the Forest Nenets, October is the month of the reindeer rut!

As part of our monthly column "The Year of the Forest Nenets", the Department of Uralic Studies has been presenting an expression that roughly corresponds to our respective month every month since April 2024. Reindeer rut month: the male reindeer rut.

In Western Siberia the reindeer rut begins in mid-September, the animals gather in mixed herds on hills or near watering holes. During this time, the stags can be recognised by their snorting and, above all, their smell.

The venison is at its best in autumn before the rut: the animals are fat, with some specimens producing over 100 kg of venison. 

In mid-May to early June, the cows give birth to a calf; two calves in one litter are rare.

Месяц оленьей охоты

Октябрь - месяц оленьего гона в лесу!

В рамках нашей ежемесячной рубрики "Год лесного ненца" Институт финноугроведения/уралистики с апреля 2024 года каждый месяц представляет выражение, примерно соответствующее текущему месяцу. Месяц оленьего гона –октябрь: гон самцов.

В середине сентября в Западной Сибири начинается гон оленей, и животные собираются в смешанные стада на холмах или у водопоев. В это время оленей можно узнать по фырканью и, прежде всего, по запаху.

Осенью, до наступления гона, оленина становится самой вкусной: животные жирные, некоторые особи дают более 100 кг оленины. 

В середине мая - начале июня у коров рождается олененок; два олененка в одном помете - редкость.
