Month of the lactation of the reindeer

The Department of Uralic Studies will guide you through the Year of the Dolgans from April 2025. Each month we will introduce you to an expression that roughly corresponds to our respective month. The names of the months are taken from the grammar by Chris Lasse Däbritz and our corpus. The Dolgan people call the month of April the "month of the lactation of the reindeer," as this is when the reindeer begin to give birth to their calves and start nursing them. Female reindeer produce rich, nutrient-dense milk, which is high in fat and protein, helping the calves grow quickly and prepare for the harsh conditions of the Arctic tundra. For the Dolgans, a nomadic people in Siberia, this period is crucial, as their survival is deeply connected to the well-being of their reindeer.
