The Department of Uralic Studies guides you through the Year of the Dolgans since April 2025. Each month we will introduce you to an expression that roughly corresponds to our respective month. The names of the months are taken from the grammar by Chris Lasse Däbritz and our corpus. In the far north of Siberia, the Dolgans call September the “Month when the night gets dark.” After the bright summer weeks, when the sun barely sets, darkness returns in a noticeable way. The nights grow longer and deeper, and with them comes a clear display of stars over the tundra. In a region where the seasons are defined above all by changes in light, this month marks the transition into the cold season. The air becomes cooler, the first frost is possible, and the landscape prepares for winter.

На крайнем севере долганы называют сентябрь «месяцем, когда ночь становится темной». После ярких летних недель, когда солнце почти не заходит, темнота снова набирает обороты. Ночи становятся длиннее и темнее, а вместе с ними над тундрой загорается яркое звездное небо. В регионе, где времена года определяются прежде всего изменениями освещенности, этот месяц знаменует переход к холодному сезону. Воздух становится прохладнее, возможны первые заморозки, и всё вокруг готовится к зиме.
