Month of the polar night

The Department of Uralic Studies guides you through the Year of the Dolgans since April 2025. Each month we will introduce you to an expression that roughly corresponds to our respective month. The names of the months are taken from the grammar by Chris Lasse Däbritz and our corpus. For the Dolgans, December marks the “Month of the polar night.” The sun stays completely below the horizon, and darkness lasts for weeks. Moonlight, stars, and at times the glow of the aurora borealis shape the appearance of the tundra. Despite the cold and the long night, life goes on – adapted to the rhythm of this distinctive season.

Для долган декабрь – это «месяц полярной ночи». Солнце полностью скрывается за горизонтом, и ночь длится неделями. Луна, звезды, а иногда и северное сияние формируют облик тундры. Несмотря на холод и долгие ночи, жизнь продолжается – конечно, учитывая ритм этого необычного времени года.
