Month when the deadfalls fall

The Department of Uralic Studies guides you through the Year of the Dolgans since April 2025. Each month we will introduce you to an expression that roughly corresponds to our respective month. The names of the months are taken from the grammar by Chris Lasse Däbritz and our corpus. For the Dolgans, February is closely linked to winter hunting. Its name, “Month when the deadfalls fall,” refers to a period when traps are triggered more often. Fur-bearing animals are particularly active, and hunting makes an important contribution to subsistence.

Для долган февраль тесно связан с зимней охотой. Его название «Месяц, когда захлопываются ловушки» относится к периоду, когда ловушки срабатывают чаще всего. Пушные звери особенно активны в это время года, и охота вносит важный вклад в обеспечение пропитания.
