The Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) has emerged as a formidable criminal organization, perpetuating extreme violence to expand its dominion. The CJNG’s violence stems from its involvement in illegal drug production, marked territorial dispute, elimination of rivals, and protection of operations. Additionally, the group engages in human trafficking, subjecting victims to forced recruitment, exploitation, and control through violence. The CJNG’s actions unfurl within a complex regional landscape characterized by institutional weakness, social inequality, and political disputes. Local responses to the group’s violence vary, encompassing civil resistance, collaboration, and governmental inaction. The ongoing debate surrounding drug prohibition and legalization in the Americas plays a significant role in understanding the CJNG’s dynamics. While prohibition fuels the lucrative black market and incentives violence, legalization could potentially reduce the illicit market and associated violence yet introduce new challenges. This article delves into intricate relationship between the CJNG illicit activities, regional dynamic, and local responses within the context of drug prohibition and legalization in the Americas.

Edgar Guerra es Investigador por México del Consejo Nacional de Humanidades, Ciencias y Tecnologías y adscrito al Departamento de Sociología de la Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes. Es Doctor en Sociología por la Universidad de Bielefeld, Alemania y Maestro en Sociología Política por el Instituto Mora. Es miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores. Sus líneas de trabajo se encuentran en el campo de la sociología de la acción colectiva, sociedad civil y respuestas societales frente a la violencia, así como grupos armados, crimen organizado, violencia, seguridad pública, política de drogas y movimientos sociales.
