Enrolment requirements
If you want to study at Universität Hamburg, particularly at the IAA, you will need to fulfill special requirements.
Which prerequisites do I have to fulfil for enrolment?
Bachelor
The most important prerequisite for being accepted to study at Universität Hamburg is the Abitur (German secondary school leaving certificate, A-levels) or other proof of higher education entrance eligibility.
In addition, admission to our degree programs at Universität Hamburg is restricted; this is referred to as Numerus Clausus or NC. Admission is granted based on academic achievement (grade point average of Abitur) and the waiting period (how many semesters ago the Abitur was taken without calculating semesters studied).
You can read about the level of language proficiency we require under the heading “How good does my English have to be?”

Master
Before you can apply for a masterʼs degree program at the Institute of English and American Studies, you must have completed a first degree with a major in English and American studies. However, other literature and cultural studies degree programs, preferably with a focus on English or American studies, may be accepted if you have the necessary language skills.
For the specific admission requirements and degree programs accepted, please see the descriptions of the individual masterʼs degree programs.
