Month of the swan moult

The moult of anatids takes place in a period roughly corresponding to our months of June, July and August. Today we'll tell you why the moult is so important for Forest Nenets and why even a month is  dedicated to it.

As part of our monthly column "The Year of the Forest Nenets", the Department of Uralic Studies has been presenting an expression that roughly corresponds to our respective month every month since April 2024. Swan molting month - July: the swan molts.

For many birds, moulting is a gradual process lasting two to three months. The plumage renews itself according to a fixed sequence so that the ability to fly is maintained. With male anatids, however, the process is very rapid and the plumage is completely renewed in a short period of time. This is of great importance for hunters: towards the end of the breeding season of the female anatids, the males gather in very large flocks and meet at fixed moulting sites to spend the time they are unable to fly there. This is the peak season for hunting large waterfowl. Large numbers of birds can be caught using the simplest methods, so that the supply of preserved poultry often lasts well into the winter.

Месяц линьки лебедей – июль: лебедь линяет.

У многих птиц линька - это постепенный процесс, длящийся два-три месяца. Оперение обновляется в определенной последовательности, что позволяет сохранить способность к полету. У самцов утиных, однако, этот процесс происходит очень быстро, и оперение полностью обновляется за короткий промежуток времени. Это имеет большое значение для охотников: к концу брачного периода самцы собираются в очень большие стаи и встречаются в определенных местах линьки, чтобы провести там время, когда они не могут летать. Это пик сезона охоты на крупную водоплавающую дичь. Огромное количество птиц можно поймать самыми простыми способами, так что запасов заготовленной птицы часто хватает на всю зиму.
