It can get very cold in Siberia, especially around the period known as January, when temperatures are below freezing and seem unimaginably cold for us here in Hamburg.

The Department of Uralic Studies will guide you through the Year of the Forest Nenets starting in April 2024. Each month we will present you with an expression that roughly corresponds to our respective month. January is the month of cold weather.

Siberia has a harsh climate, with the coldest winter period lasting from around mid-December to the end of January. The Taimyr Peninsula is located in the far north, around 1,300 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle and is therefore part of the polar region. The average maximum temperatures in the months of December to March are around -24 ˚C at most, with the lowest temperatures averaging below -30 ˚C. Extremes of -60 ˚C are not uncommon. The ground is covered in snow for almost two thirds of the year, with temperatures on the Taimyr Peninsula only exceeding 0 ˚C in June, July and August.

In winter, it is not only very cold on the Taimyr Peninsula, but the days are also very short: the polar night, a period in which the sun does not rise above the horizon, begins around the end of November and ends around mid-January.  The Forest Nenets use this period for a winter rest: hunting is stopped and preparations are made for the upcoming hunting season.

Месяц холодной погоды

В Сибири бывает очень холодно, особенно в январе, когда температура опускается ниже нуля и кажется невообразимо холодной для нас здесь, в Гамбурге.

Начиная с апреля 2024 года, институт финноугроведения/уралистики проведет вас через Год лесного ненца. Каждый месяц мы будем знакомить вас с выражениями, которые примерно соответствуют ему. Месяц  холода – январь.

В Сибири суровый климат, самый холодный зимний период длится примерно с середины декабря по конец января. Полуостров Таймыр расположен на крайнем севере, примерно в 1300 километрах к северу от Северного полярного круга, и относится к полярному региону. Средние максимальные температуры в период с декабря по март не поднимаются выше -24 ˚C, а самые низкие температуры в среднем ниже -30 ˚C. Нередки экстремальные значения до -60 ˚C. Почти две трети года земля покрыта снегом, и только в июне, июле и августе температура на Таймырском полуострове превышает 0 ˚C.

Зимой на Таймырском полуострове не только очень холодно, но и очень короткие дни: полярная ночь - период, когда солнце не поднимается над горизонтом, - начинается примерно в конце ноября и длится примерно до середины января.  Лесные ненцы используют этот период для зимнего отдыха: охота прекращается, но зато идет подготовка к следующему охотничьему сезону.
