The month of the arrival of the real eagle

After February, March is the second eagle month of the Forest Nenets.

The Department of Uralic Studies will guide you through the Year of the Forest Nenets starting in April 2024. Each month we will present you with an expression that roughly corresponds to our respective month. March is the month of the real eagle's arrival: the eagle comes from the south.

For the Forest Nenets February and March are the eagle months, and they have a double naming motivation. On the one hand, the eagle returns to central and northern Siberia in spring, and on the other, it symbolizes the return of the sun.

The first functional equivalence seems to denote a different type of eagle. In the second functional equivalence, the frequently used motif 'false - real' appears. According to Harva, such doubly used naming motifs serve as leap months in years in which only 12 lunations take place (Sobanski 1995:p. 56). The Khanty, the neighbors of the Forest Nenets, so to speak, call these periods 'lying eagle month' and 'true eagle month', which is a variant of true and false.

Месяц прилета настоящего орла

После февраля март - второй месяц орла у лесных ненцев.

Месяц прилета настоящего орла – март: орел с юга прилетает.

Февраль и март - орлиные месяцы у лесных ненцев, и они имеют двойную именословную подоплеку. С одной стороны, орел весной возвращается в центральную и северную Сибирь, а с другой - символизирует возвращение солнца.

Первая функциональная эквивалентность, скорее всего, относится к другому виду орла. Во второй функциональной эквивалентности появляется часто используемый мотив "ложное - настоящее". По мнению Харвы, такие дважды используемые мотивы наименования служат високосными месяцами в годы, в которых только 12 лун (Sobanski 1995:56). Ханты, так сказать, соседи лесных кочевников, называют эти периоды "месяцем лживого орла" и "месяцем истинного орла", что является вариантом истинного и ложного.
