The Department of Uralic Studies guides you through the Year of the Dolgans since April 2025. Each month we will introduce you to an expression that roughly corresponds to our respective month. The names of the months are taken from the grammar by Chris Lasse Däbritz and our corpus. The Dolgan people call July the "month when the mosquitoes fall." During this time, the number of mosquitoes reaches its peak. The warm temperatures and standing water from the snowmelt create ideal conditions for their reproduction. Swarms of mosquitoes make life difficult for both humans and animals. However, toward the end of the month, their numbers suddenly decline - due to cooler nights, strong winds, or their natural life cycle. This moment brings noticeable relief and marks the transition to the second half of the short Arctic summer.

Долганы называют июль «месяцем, когда падают комары». В это время количество комаров достигает своего пика. Теплая погода и стоячая вода после таяния снега создают идеальные условия для их размножения. Стаи комаров осложняют жизнь и людям, и животным. Однако к концу месяца их численность внезапно снижается - будь то из-за прохладных ночей, сильного ветра или их естественного жизненного цикла. Это приносит заметное облегчение и знаменует переход ко второй половине короткого арктического лета.
