Course description: 

This course explores the intersection of two disciplines that focus on the study of culture: cultural anthropology and intercultural communication. It takes a largely culture-general approach (universal principles) and provides both the theoretical and practical tools for culture specific research and interactions. Students will gain an understanding of the largely unconscious frameworks guiding their own and others’ communication patterns and preferences and, as a result, improve both their understanding of the principles and their interactions across cultures. Emphasis is on active learning and a comparative framework. 

Course schedule: 

1. Introductions, what is anthropology, what is intercultural communication? Culture defined and the history of the study of culture and communication 

2. Communication channels – how do we send messages? and Communication styles – I understand your words but what do you mean? 

3. Cultural values orientations: the underlying motivation for all activity, including Communication 

4. Theory: The Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity 

5. In-class simulation
