Australian Media History
Archives, Anniversaries and Audiences
This presentation considers the development of media history as a field of research in Australia. After a brief focus on the press, it moves to broadcasting, considering questions around the state of radio and television archives, and finding voices of listeners and viewers in public service broadcasting and other media archives. It reflects on the challenges and opportunities entailed in a current collaboration between academics, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the National Archives of Australia to open up and make discoverable the ABC’s large and enormously rich archive in the lead-up to its centenary in 2032. The presentation concludes by reflecting on the benefits, and the limitations, of digital tools and techniques for Australian media historians.
The presentation is part of the cooperative project Transnational Media Histories (TMH). TMH involves the Centre for Media History at Macquarie University and the Research Centre Media History at Universität Hamburg and Hans-Bredow-Institut.
Bridget Griffen-Foley is a Professor of Media at Macquarie University, where she founded the Centre for Media History. She is the author of several books about the history of the Australian media, including Australian Radio Listeners and Television Viewers: Historical Perspectives (2021), and edited A Companion to the Australian Media (2014).
