Session 1:  Working with EEG: Introduction and Instruction

Dr. Sabine Gosselke Berthelsen (Lund University) & Dr. Anne Wienholz (UHH)

 Sabine Gosselke Berthelsen is a postdoctoral researcher in general linguistics at Lund University. Her research interests include psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, second language acquisition, and prosody.
Anne Wienholz is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of German Sign Language and Communication of the Deaf (IDGS) at the University of Hamburg. Her research interests focus on sign language linguistics and include psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics and language acquisition.

16:00-18:00 Linguistic research with EEG: conducting experiments

In this session you will receive an introduction to the use of electroencephalography (EEG) for the study of language use and processing. The first part will be a practical demonstration of what an EEG system looks like and how to set up an EEG recording. In the second part, we will discuss how EEG can be used for the study of speech. We will focus on the technique of event-related potentials (ERP), learn about different language-related ERP components and discuss how to set up an ERP experiment.

After this session you will be able to

• set up an EEG recording (with help),
• understand the event-related potentials technique,
• recognise the most common language ERP components,
• choose appropriate stimuli and conditions for an ERP experiment,
• start thinking about your own ERP experiment.
   

Session  2: Working with PsychoPy

Line Burholt Kristensen (University of Copenhagen)

 Line Burholt Kristensen is an assiociate professor at the Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics at the University of Copenhagen. Her research interests are psycholinguistics, experimental linguistics, neurolinguistics with focus on grammar, information structure, syntax, semantics, pragmatics.

11:30-12:30: Break
12:30-14:00: An introduction to doing language experiments in PsychoPy Builder II
 
PsychoPy is a free and versatile software for stimulus presentation and for psychometrics (e.g. for measuring reaction times). It is relatively easy to learn and popular for language experiments. You don't need coding skills to do experiments in PsychoPy. The format of the workshop session will be short lectures introducing different types of language experiments (focusing on reading experiments) and paradigms followed by tutorials and hands on exercises (where you run PsychoPy by yourself).

After this workshop session you should be able to

• design a simple language experiment in PsychoPy Builder,
• run and customize existing experiments in PsychoPy Builder,
• work with input and output in PsychoPy Builder,
• choose an appropriate experimental paradigm,
• be inspired do your own experiments in PsychoPy and learn more about the software.

PsychoPy is installed on the PCs in A13.002.
