Abstract
In this talk I argue that care is central to processes of (re)producing cultural difference. The paradoxical starting example is a woman who grew up in state care and was labeled “Gypsy,” despite lacking any ties to a Roma community. Reiterated utterances of difference reinforced her categorization as “Gypsy,” to the point that her children eventually inherited it. In significant ways, the state becomes the co-producer of cultural difference through care encounters. At the same time, this classification entails a kind of ambivalent inclusion in the village and the state. While de-categorization is possible, it could be linked to severe hardships as well. Relying on long-term ethnographic fieldwork complemented by several recorded interviews, this extended case study demonstrates the temporality and ambivalence of classification tied to discourses and practices of care that are relevant beyond the Hungarian context.
