Audience design for chatbots: why we need it and how researching language variation can help
Complaining about a purchase, seeking mental health support or booking a doctor’s appointment: do these things and you might yourself interacting with a chatbot rather than a real person. Given the ever-increasing prevalence of chatbots for everyday tasks, this talk will argue that designing chatbot talk needs to be done in accordance with the principles of audience design. Using data from interactions in which users book doctors’ appointments with a help of a chatbot (a digital receptionist called ‘Asa’), I will discuss how researching language variation – for example, by drawing theories of politeness and rapport – have the potential to support improved audience design.
