4. Dezember 2020, von Webredaktion IfG
Am 11.12.2020 trägt von 14-16 Uhr Jenia Yudytska (Universität Hamburg) vor. Im Folgenden ein Abstract zu ihrem Vortrag:
Device effects: The influence of communication device on language in online communication
Linguistic research on computer-mediated communication generally treats language production via personal computer and via mobile device as broadly similar. In contrast, a device effect on language does exist in the public consciousness, e.g. in regard to capitalisation practices or message length. While there is some empirical research regarding a possible device effect, it is as yet inconclusive, and investigating the communication device variable is often incidental to research aims.
My current PhD project seeks to centre the effect of communication device on language, and to answer the following questions. Does the device used affect linguistic features, and if so, in what way? If a device effect exists, how does it interact with contextual factors such as the social identity of the user or the characteristics of the platform used? To answer these questions, I have compiled a novel corpus using messages from the platforms Discord and Twitter. Drawing on ideas from the field of Human-Computer Interaction, in particular the concept of affordances, I hope to investigate the effect of device on language thoroughly.
